Construction of sand dams

Context: Rivers in East Pokot Sub County (Kenya) are seasonal and dry up immediately after the rain season. By February of 2017, 95% of water sources across East Pokot had dried up, affecting the communities nearby and the livestock that depend on these river to supply their water needs.

Solution proposed: The project seeks to address the problem of acute water shortage in the vast East Pokot region by building sand dams, a simple, low-cost, low-maintenance water harvesting technology. The sand dam collects the rain water flowing down the stream and the river banks, which is then pumped to a tank and filtered. The project builds up on pilot sand dams made by John’s organization, Hifadhi Africa Organization.
